FUPA exercises can build strength and contribute to overall fitness, but they cannot reliably target fat above the pubic bone. The useful approach combines suitable aerobic activity and strength training, with separate advice for postpartum recovery.
This guide explains what exercise can change, gives examples of core work and sets realistic expectations. For food and treatment options, see our main reduction guide.
Why Crunches Do Not Target Pubic Fat
Spot reduction means trying to remove fat from one chosen area by exercising nearby muscles. Crunches train the abdominal muscles; this does not establish that they selectively reduce the fat over the mons pubis.
Research on localised exercise does not justify a guaranteed FUPA-burning routine. Studies of abdominal or limb fat also do not automatically establish an effect on pubic fat.
Choose exercises for strength and function rather than promises of local fat removal. Overall fat loss may change fullness when weight loss is appropriate, but the outcome varies.
What Exercise Can Change
Aerobic activity supports cardiovascular fitness and contributes to energy expenditure. Strength training develops the muscles you use for daily movement. Core stability work helps you control your trunk during tasks such as lifting and reaching.
These benefits matter even if your body outline changes little. Exercise does not guarantee weight loss, and a particular workout cannot determine where fat is lost.
Our diet guide explains how eating habits fit alongside activity.

Pelvic Alignment and Comfortable Movement
Your position changes how your abdomen looks, but a photograph cannot diagnose weak muscles, tight hip flexors or a posture problem. A naturally curved lower back is not automatically something to correct.
Work towards comfortable movement and control rather than forcing a flat stomach or a rigid pelvic position. A physiotherapist can assess pain or movement difficulties and recommend suitable exercises.
There is no dependable posture programme that guarantees a flatter pubic area within four to eight weeks.
Diastasis Recti Needs Individual Advice
Diastasis recti is separation of the abdominal muscles, often following pregnancy. It can contribute to abdominal bulging, but it is different from pubic fat.
The NHS post-pregnancy guidance recommends contacting your GP if the gap remains obvious eight weeks after birth. A physiotherapist can assess recovery and advise on pelvic floor and deep stomach exercises.
The NHS advises avoiding sit-ups, planks and high-impact exercise initially while recovering from separation. This is not a permanent ban on those movements; progression should reflect your recovery.
Read our postpartum recovery guide for more context.

Core Exercises to Discuss or Try
These are general exercise examples, not a postpartum rehabilitation prescription. Choose movements appropriate to your health and experience. Stop if they cause pain, and seek advice if you have symptoms or are recovering from surgery.
Bird Dog
Start on hands and knees, with hands under shoulders and knees under hips. Reach one arm forward and the opposite leg back while keeping your trunk steady. Return slowly and change sides.
For an easier version, move just one limb at a time. Avoid arching your back or lifting above trunk height. Harvard Health explains bird-dog technique and common mistakes.
Glute Bridge
Lie on your back with knees bent and feet on the floor. Gently raise your hips using your buttock muscles, then lower with control. Use a comfortable range and avoid pushing into a large lower-back arch.
How to Progress
Begin with a few controlled repetitions that feel manageable. Increase the amount gradually as technique and comfort allow. A harder variation or longer hold is not automatically better, and no repetition count specifically burns FUPA fat.

Combine Aerobic Activity and Strength Training
The NHS adult activity guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week. Include strengthening activities for all major muscle groups on at least two days.
Walking, cycling or swimming can contribute to the aerobic part. Bodyweight movements, resistance bands or weights can provide strength training. Core exercises are only one part of a balanced routine.
Spread activity across the week and build up gradually. General targets should be adapted to your fitness and health; speak to your GP first if you have concerns or have not exercised for some time.
Realistic Expectations and Timelines
Strength and exercise tolerance can improve without a visible change in pubic fullness. Individual fat distribution and skin affect the outline, so progress cannot be predicted from a fixed number of weeks.
There is no reliable rule that the FUPA changes last. Avoid escalating exercise simply because another part of your body looks different first.
Our guides to whether a FUPA goes away and FUPA on a lean body explain why normal fullness may persist.
What Exercise Cannot Do for Loose Skin
Exercise can build muscle, but it cannot remove a substantial excess-skin fold. Skin and fat can overlap, so appearance alone may not tell you which is involved.
The NHS tummy-tuck guide explains surgical removal of excess abdominal skin and its risks. Our surgery guide compares options, but normal, comfortable fullness does not require treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Crunches Get Rid of a FUPA?
Crunches strengthen abdominal muscles but do not reliably target pubic fat. A balanced routine supports fitness; it cannot guarantee a flat pubic area.
Which Exercises Are Worth Doing?
Combine suitable aerobic activity with whole-body strength training. Core exercises such as bird dogs and bridges can develop control, but they are not local fat-burning exercises.
Can I Do FUPA Exercises After Pregnancy?
Start with activity suited to your recovery. If you suspect abdominal muscle separation or have symptoms, ask your GP or a physiotherapist for guidance before demanding core work.
